My History As a Reader
Jan 31
It's been awhile since I last wrote in my blog. I thought I would talk of my history as a reader. I could consider myself a good reader.. when I want to be one. Every kid is "forced" to start reading at about grade one. At first I didn't enjoy reading at all, not even the simplest books. I feel as if I didn't get a kick out of it. I also read very very slow and barely understood what I was reading. Compared to the other kids, I felt like I wasn't going anywhere. Then my mom put me in a reading program at school. It really helped me and got me to enjoy reading. The instructors would read along with us and make sure we're all on the right track as to where the stories were going. It even made me read on my spare time!
When I hit about grade 3, we were required to write reading logs for every time we read. As my reading capabilities increased, so did the level of books I was reading. I was awarded and recognized for my outstanding reading and spelling abilities, as reading increased my vocabulary too. By grade 4, we were required to read A LOT. My teacher LOVED reading books. She emphasized how important reading one is, and how much it impacts our lives. I read a lot of novels in grade 4, probably as much as a highschool kid would read. I was given the literature award that year.
Unfortunately, the following years my reading went down. I guess when my dad bought me a gamecube, I really did get distracted from it, and it grabbed all my attention. From then on until highschool, I read a book every so often, maybe about once or twice a month. We weren't required to write reading logs after grade 4.
By attending Notre Dame, each student is required to read an "Accelerated Reader" (AR for short) novel. You are expected to meet a certain amount of points by the end of the year. In grade 8 and 9, I reached the expected points. Sadly, in grade 10, I guess I felt lazy and decided only to achieve half of the points expected. This disappointed my mother, who also had an inspiration for reading.
Currently, I have finished my AR points for grade 11. I finished them by the end of November, and that is why I haven't been writing in my blog recently :P. From what I noticed from my reading, I can assess that I still enjoy reading, but not as much as I used to. I don't find as much satisfaction from it. BUT I can say that I love reading books that I'm interested in. I love certain genres such as adventure and mystery, and books about sports. I'm also interested in reading about the latest trending books such as the Hunger Games, just to see what's so good about them. I know I should branch out more, and maybe I'll find more genres that I'll enjoy.
