Mockingjay - Suzanne Collins

p.1-135 Part One: Ashes

It turns out there really is a District 13. This is the new home of Katniss, Gale, and survivors from the bombing of District 12. Everyone in District 13 plans to overthrow the Capitol and rebel, except Katniss. In fact she's not quite sure what she should do and who she can trust. One known fact is that Katniss wants Peeta alive and safe, knowing he's being held hostage by the Capitol. Her character shows definite signs that she misses him. It excites me reading this final book of the series, as it still keeps the action going. Like all happy endings, I predict that somehow Katniss and Peeta will be with each other again. The star crossed lovers from District 12 will marry each other after a crazy series of events.

p.137-261 Part Two: The Assault

In the beginning of Part Two, the rebels rescue Peeta. The only problem is Peeta is not his normal self because of "tracker jacker stings," which bring upon nightmares from what is true. This causes Peeta to almost choke Katniss to death when they first see each other again and also hurt Katniss emotionally. Peeta's condition slowly gets better. The rebels along with Katniss and Gale also attacked District 2, the Capitol's "second base." Katniss managed to get the people of District 2 to rebel against the Capitol. The rest of part two talks of rehabilitation for Katniss' many injuries, and training for the attack to the Capitol. Towards the end, Katniss, Gale, Finnick, and a few other characters are sent with many other squads to attack the Capitol. One member of this squad gets badly injured. So the rebels send in a troop to replace that member. Peeta is the replacement. Because this is the last book of the series, it uses a lot of flashback. One quote that helped me understand what was going on with Peeta was "They'll figure out he doesn't know anything pretty fast. And they won't kill him if they think they can use him against you." This was said by Finnick reassuring Katniss that they wouldn't kill Peeta. I am excited to finally find out how the Hunger Games saga concludes.

p.265-390 Part Three: The Assassin

When this squad further advances, half of them die, such as Finnick. Katniss keeps thinking to herself that all these people are dying for her. When the rebels surrounded the president's mansion, kids from all over the districts were behind one barricade. Parachutes were falling, containing food, water, and .. bombs. Katniss saw the bombs light up. Then she saw a familiar face, and recognized her sister. After she noticed her sister died, she caught on fire by one of the bombs. The doctor's were able to heal Katniss, as good as new. The rebels were able to overthrow the Capitol. Now she had one final mission, kill Snow, which she did. Katniss also killed President Coin, the one who took over President of the Capitol because Coin did not really like Katniss all along. All these crazy series of events made Katniss paranoid. In the end of the story, we find out that Katniss was to live in the rebuilt District 12 in her victor's house. Soon, Peeta came and took care of her. They ended up getting married, and I guess you could say live happily ever after.

I'd recommend this book to an audience of teenagers (mostly girls). Throughout the series, Suzanne Collins talks through Katniss and her thoughts making it a limited omniscient. Katniss goes through every possibility, and thinks through every situation. I believe that this book corresponds to real life because girls do think a lot. Especially with every thought of Peeta, it made Katniss fall in love with him a little more without even knowing it. This series is a good example of how romance and action can go well together.
